THE FORGOTTEN FUTURE

With adolescent behavior problems more prevalent than ever before, you probably know someone affected by such problems--maybe even you, yourself, had similar troubles at a younger age. We often hear in the news about the violence perpetrated by and upon our young people and the emotional impact suffered by victims of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect.

What you may not know, however, is that it is estimated that twenty percent of America's children under the age of 18 suffer from mental disorders. Between 6.4 and 9 million of them suffer from serious mental illnesses, i.e., a mental disorder which causes serious emotional disability. Many of these problems are rooted in abuse of some sort.

As I relate these statistics, I'm wondering whether or not you are also aware that each year hundreds of thousands of our children and adolescents are placed into inpatient facilities--hospitals, residential treatment centers, boot camps, treatment academies--with the hope that they will later return home, somehow "better"? Dare I even say, "fixed"?
